Blog 21: Independent Component

Interpretive:

All the art work that I made for my independent component represents my senior project. I picked art piece that are very popular in Mexico, for instance the Posada skeletons. Posada's art pieces are a part of Mexico's history as well as the true meaning of the day of the dead. In Mexico they use a lot of paper mache figures and a lot of those pieces require wire frames to make figures. 

Applied:

My independent component helped me answer on of my questions from my EQ because in Mexico, all their art pieces have history in them. For instance pinatas, they have been around for decades. They are made simply with wire and paper. When I decided to make the Skeleton with Monarch Wings I thought how pretty similar they are to pinatas. They both require you to make a figure with wire then apply all the paper and decorate. It was also very helpful because with this component I was able to somewhat master the Sermel paper mache technique that is used in Tonala, Mexico. I was able to learn from the mistakes in the beginning and correct them by making a better papier mache figure.

Pablo took several hours to create but in the end it was all worth it. I imitated this style which helped me in my first answers for my 2 hour presentation. He was sold in an auction for ifest, which is pretty cool.

After making the figure with wire, I applied paper mache on the skeleton.

I then painted it white and finished the detail on the monarch wings.

Added more detail on the the skeleton "Pablo" :)

Independent Component 2

Made another one of the famous Posada painting and will make a papel picado art piece out of it.

Amate birds are drawn on amate paper, bark from trees.

Making the monarch wings for the skeleton, First I had to cut out all the left overs of the paper mache then I need to paint it white for the base color.

After painting it white for better showing of the colors I outlined it with black for more detail of the wing.

First I will need to make the frame of the body with wire.

I made extra paper mache butterflies for better quality than the first time I tried.

1. Effective Learner, Effective Communicator
2. For effective learner I create my own folk art. For example I create my own paper mache figures based off of what I learned from my research. When creating the Sermel method of making papier mache figures I go step by step of what I learned from the article in order to get a good qualtiy folk art. I also research other ways to create different types of folk art for example papel picado, wooden carving or even pinatas. I learn how other artist create their art and try to experiment with it and learn from them.
    For effective communicator, when I volunteer with my mentor I'm always surrounded by artists and other interns, its my job to communicate with them to place their art piece in the appropriate place or simply get along with the interns and my mentor to create a good enviornment. I also need to communicate with other people when we hold new exhibits for new artist, this requires me to pass out flyers, welcome them and ask if the want to register to be apart of the LAM family.
